As for why Xander lied...I dont' think it's about denying her agency, or about any "gentlemanly" notions about her being a female. I think it's about Buffy's repeatedly demonstratedly inability and unwillingness to kill Angel when she's holding on to the slightest hope "her" Angel will be restored....and how the stakes in this particular battle are just, IMO, too high. If it's a choice between Angle or The Rest of the World...well, you can probably guess where my vote goes. IMO, the question of Buffy's agency is utterly moot and irrelevent.
As for me being combative...well, Xander's my favorite character, and I'm simply tired of this "Xander's a bad friend" wank...and I think Joss's continued use of Xander as a friend of Buffy's over the years says otherwise.
