I read your essay and liked our point of view, but I was thinking. Maybe Xander was punished. He lost everyone he had a relationship with, ie Cordelia, Anya. he lost an eye. All the rest of the Scoobies went on to something better. Buffy got the Immortal, Willow got Kennedy, Cordelia went off and became god (or something). Even Spike, who he hated more than Angel, got close to Buffy and died saving the world. So in the end, maybe what Xander got was punishment for betraying Buffy. He ended up alone, and disfigured.
